Stan Rowley

Stan Rowley (actually: Stanley Rupert Rowley, born September 11, 1876 in Young, New South Wales, † April 1, 1924 in Manly, New South Wales) was an Australian athlete and participant in the Olympic Games.

At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 he competed for Australia in three sprint events and took third place respectively. In the 60 - meter dash behind the two Americans Alvin Kraenzlein and Walter Tewksbury, the 100 -meter run behind the two Americans Frank Jarvis and again Tewksbury and the 200 -meter run behind Tewksbury and Norman Pritchard from India. The flow about 200 m could Rowley decide against Tewksbury even for themselves, but in the finals he had a clear residue.

Rowley was a pure sprinter, even more astonishing was his participation in the 5000 -meter team running. The team's run was not intended as a national ranking, but advertised for a club or association teams. In the final of the British Athletic Federation Amateur Athletic Association (AAA ) competed against the French athletics club Racing Club de France ( RCF). They were the only teams entered.

A team consisted of five athletes. The AAA included not only four British runners also the Australian Rowley. As a member of the British Empire, he was allowed to start for the AAA. Rowley was for the 5000 m actually unsuitable, but there was no one else for the AAA start legitimate runner in Paris. Its launch had only intended to complete the team, because from the beginning they had expected that he would occupy the last place. So Rowley let it go slow, and crossed as the penultimate, the Frenchman Michel Champoudry the finish line, Rowley had covered only 3500 m. The judges then decided that Rowley did not have to finish his race.

Was evaluated according to place numbers (1st place = 1 point; 2nd place = 2 points, etc.). The team with the lowest place number ( points ) was the winner. With space 1, 2, 6 and 7 of the other runners the team of the AAA was sure of victory.

Thus Rowley managed the curiosity in an Olympic champion to be completely unsuitable for him in discipline as he had to settle for three times with the third place in its specialized disciplines.
