Formation

After the guitarist Mick Abrahams had left the band due to musical differences with Ian Anderson and after a brief stint of Tony Iommi, who later became guitarist and founding member of Black Sabbath, Martin Lancelot Barre came to Jethro Tull. He should be in addition to Anderson, the only permanent member of the band from then on. Ian Anderson took over from this album alone the task of playwriting.

Style

Due to the withdrawal of Mick Abrahams also the musical direction of the band shifted. Was the first album This Was in part, blue -heavy, can be heard on Stand Up Progressive rock with folk-rock influences. Only the first track of the album, A New Day Yesterday, still reminiscent of the blues-rock style of its predecessor. Also one of the most famous pieces of Jethro Tull is on this album: the adaptation of the Bourrée in E minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. At the beginning is indicated by flute and bass the topic and then goes to a jazz-rock improvisation.
