Stanislas Julien

Aignan Stanislas Julien ( * 1797 in Orléans, † February 14, 1873 in Paris) was a French sinologist and versatile Orientalist.

Julien was Professeur de langue et culture chinoise et tartare - mandchou at the Collège de France in Paris and wrote seminal works on the history of Chinese arts and crafts. He translated many classical literary and historical works from Chinese and gave one of the first modern experiences of Chinese Linguistics from the Qing period the West.

Appreciation

The Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres awards the Prix Stanislas Julien for major publications in Sinology annually.
