Stanisław Skrowaczewski

Stanisław Skrowaczewski ( born October 3, 1923 in Lviv, then Poland) is a Polish composer and conductor.

Life

As a child he studied the violin and piano. At the age of eleven years Skrowaczewski debuted as a pianist and quickly made a name. At thirteen he first conducted an orchestra. One suffered in World War II hand injury ended his career as a pianist.

After the war Skrowaczewski 1946 was music director of the Wrocław Philharmonic. Then followed Principals in Warsaw, Katowice and Krakow. Eventually he became chief conductor of the Warsaw National Orchestra. After training at the Academy of Music in Krakow Poland sat Skrowaczewski his composition studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger continued.

In 1956 he won the Santa Cecilia competition for conductors. At the invitation of George Szell Skrowaczewski conducted the renowned Cleveland Orchestra. Guest conductor with other American orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic followed. In 1960 he was appointed music director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. With the RSO Saarbrücken, he played the complete symphonies of Anton Bruckner for Arte Nova (now Oehms ) and was awarded in 2002 the " Cannes Classical Award".
