Stanisław Wyspiański

Stanisław Wyspiański ( born January 15, 1869 in Krakow, † November 28, 1907 ) was a Polish artist and member of the movement " Young Poland ".

During a stay in Paris, he was influenced by the Art Nouveau, but also by the encounter with artists from the circle around Paul Gauguin. He was also probably made ​​about Stanisław Przybyszewski acquainted with the painting of the Norwegian Edvard Munch.

Wyspiański worked as a painter and draftsman, designing ornaments, stage decorations and stained glass windows. The latter include, for example, the window of the Franciscan Church in Krakow. He also wrote several plays, in which he processed themes from mythology and legends, but also from the Polish history.

The works Wyspiański can be found today in many Polish museums, including the Wyspiański Museum in Krakow.

Wesele

His best known work is " Night Drive " ( wedding) of 1901. This was based on the above actually took place in the wedding of his friend Lucjan Rydel with a farmer's daughter from a village near Krakow and called for its premiere a scandal out. 1973 " Night Drive " was filmed by Andrzej Wajda. The drama in three acts was translated in 1976 by Henryk Bereska and 1992 by Karl Dedecius.

In the first act, the simple farmers meet in the peasant's hut with the artists from the Krakow Bohème. In the second act suddenly appear between the wedding guests historical figures from the past in Poland, making a sarcastic statement on the presence, among others the court jester of the Polish kings Stańczyk. The host calls for a popular uprising - but the village boy loses the golden magic horn. At the end of Act 3 in a wrapped straw appears rosebush with a violin in his hand - an ambiguous symbol shape - which leads the wedding guests to the hypnotic dance.

Quite unexpectedly, was the piece that was originally intended for the closest circle of friends from the Krakow Bohème, one of the major dramas of Polish literature. Museums and monuments
