Stankovany
Stankovany (Hungarian Sztankován ) is a municipality in the northern central Slovakia with 1216 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011), which belongs to Okres Ružomberok, kraj a circle of Žilinský and is counted to the traditional landscape Liptau.
Geography
The municipality is located on the western edge of the landscape Liptau completely surrounded on both banks of the Waag from the mountains of the Great Fatra and the Chočské Hills. Just 3 km after the village takes the Waag on the right bank Orava. A prominent mountain in the place is the northerly Šíp ( 1170 m nm). In the hamlet of Rojkov there is a peat bog, and in the immediate vicinity mineral springs are scattered. The center is located at an altitude of 438 m nm and is 16 kilometers by road from Ruzomberok and 31 Kilometers away from Martin.
History
The oldest evidence of a settlement are from the late Roman period. Written documents speak of a settlement of the area in the 14th century, but it was only in 1425 the place for the first time is mentioned by name. The name comes from the name Stanko, as the first mayor said. The first church was still made of wood, was built in the 16th century. The place was in the territory of the castle Likava and the inhabitants were engaged in agriculture, sheep farming, timber floating and basket making.
1828 are listed 138 houses and 756 inhabitants. 1831 came at a cholera epidemic killed 137 inhabitants.
