Stanley Benham

Delong Stanley ( "Stan" ) Benham (born 21 December 1913 in Lake Placid, New York, † April 22, 1970 in Miami, Florida) was an American bob pilot. He was twice world champion in four-man bobsleigh and won two Olympic silver medals.

Benham was a professional firefighter and rose to become commander of the fire brigade of Lake Placid. First, he ran ski jumping, but what he did was " too slow " according to his own statements, which is why he joined the sport in 1945. At the national level Benham is one of the most successful American bobsledders at all. In North American Championships, he won three times in the two- (1951, 1954, 1956) and four times in the four-man event (1948, 1951, 1953, 1956 ). In AAU Championships he was in the two- three times the Fastest (1954, 1956, 1957), in the four-man six times (1948, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1956, 1957).

International Benham first appeared at the World Championships 1949 in Lake Placid in appearance, when he won the gold medal with the four-man event. He repeated this success at the World Cup 1950 in Cortina d' Ampezzo; but also with a silver medal in the two-man bob. The World Cup 1951 in L' Alpe d' Huez, he finished in both disciplines in second place. Also two silver medals in the two-man and four-man event he won at the Olympic Winter Games 1952 in Oslo. Another two-man bronze medal followed at the 1954 World Cup in Cortina. Finally, he was at the World Championships 1961 in Lake Placid again second in the four-man event.
