Stanley Sadie

John Stanley Sadie (born 30 October 1930 in Wembley, † 31 March 2005 in Cossington ) was a British musicologist and music critic. Sadie received his doctorate in 1958 at the University of Cambridge. His thesis is entitled The British Chamber Music 1720-1790.

Sadie was 1957-1965 Professor at Trinity College of Music in London. From 1964 to 1981 he worked for the daily newspaper The Times as a music critic and from 1967 to 1987 as Associate Editor of The Musical Times. However, its main activity was the publication of the sixth edition of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, originally founded by George Grove, in 1980. Sadie revised the work clearly, it expanded by 9 out of 20 volumes and provided it with the suffix The New, now as The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Under the auspices Sadies released in 2001 the seventh edition, now at 29 volumes extended. The Grove Dictionary is now considered the most important encyclopedia of musicology.
