The Star Shipping Company, headquartered in Bergen was founded in 1961 by Per Waaler with the financial support of the Norwegian Shipowners' Halfdan Grieg and Rolf Westphalian -Larsen. By the year 1995, Westfalen- Larsen and Grieg Shipping 50% owner of Star Shipping, with Star Shipping on the one hand the marketing of Star Shipping, Grieg and Westphalian -Larsen ships and secondly, the bulk of the London shipping company Rethýmnis & Kulukundis care. After a partial separation, the shipping company is since 1995 a subsidiary of the Norwegian shipping company Grieg Shipping and the Singaporean shipping company Masterbulk, in turn, the Norwegian shipping group Westphalian -Larsen. The former mitbetreuten chemical tankers Westfalen- Larsen group were then marketed by its subsidiaries Western chart and West Gas in Bergen.

Star Shipping operates today a fleet of 60 to 70 ships, including 45 owned vessels (2012), and is one of the largest Norwegian shipping companies. The focus is on the operation of open multi -purpose bulk carriers, Conbulkern and a number of Handysize and Handymax bulk carriers. The company also operates several terminals, which are specialized in the handling of transported mainly by Star Shipping Ladungungsarten forest products, pulp, paper, bulk cargo, containers and project cargoes.
