Starless and Bible Black is a 1974 released album of the progressive rock band King Crimson.

Formation

King Crimson, who had acquired a reputation as an excellent live band since its founding in 1969, began in 1973 with the album Larks ' Tongues in Aspic to transfer the music style of their live performances on their studio albums. The next album Starless and Bible Black is largely emerged during some live performances in late 1973. The title trio, Fracture, We'll Let You Know, The Mincer and the title track were concert recordings that were reworked in the studio, giving the album gave the character a live atmosphere. Only the first two titles, The Great Deceiver and Lament, have been recorded exclusively in the studio. In early 1974, Robert Fripp, the last remaining founding member of the group.

Musical background and reception

Due to the concert origin of most of the recordings and the typical King Crimson numerous improvisations during concerts Starless and Bible Black is widely regarded as most experimental album of this phase. Especially numerous seemingly discordant changes of tempo and dynamic guitar riffs characterized the album. The title " Starless and Bible Black" comes from Dylan Thomas ' radio play Under Milk Wood and was also used for Starless, the fifth track on the following King Crimson album Red used. The concert, which the title trio, Fracture and Starless and Bible Black were taken, was published in full in 1997 under the name The Night Watch.
