Starodub

Starodub (Russian Стародуб ) is a town in Bryansk Oblast (Russia) with 19,010 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 170 km south-west in the Desnaniederung the Oblasthauptstadt Bryansk on the river Babinez in the river system of the Dnieper.

Starodub is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Starodub was first documented in 1080 as the Principality of Chernigov mentioned corresponding city. The name is derived from the Russian dub stary for old oak tree (see coat of arms ).

In the 13th century Starodub was burned by the Mongols under Batu Khan.

Since the 14th century the city belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Between 1503 and 1618 belonged Starodub the Grand Duchy of Moscow before it fell again to Poland.

In 1648 the city was occupied by troops Bohdan Chmelnyzkyjs, 1654 it became the home of Staroduber regiment of the Russian Army in 1666 she received the self-government. 1686 the membership of the city was laid down on Russia with the eternal peace.

In particular, in the 17th century was an important trading center Starodub between Moscow and Central Russia and the ( Polish ) Ukraine and Western Europe.

1781 Starodub received the modern city law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) of Novgorod - Seversky governorship. From 1802 it belonged to the government of Chernigov, from 1919 to Gomel province.

During World War II Starodub was occupied on 18 August 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 22 September 1943 by troops of the Bryansk Front Red Army.

Culture and sights

In the city the Mother of God Cathedral of the Nativity are ( Рождественский собор / Rozhdestvensky Sobor ) in 1617, the Epiphany ( Богоявленская церковь / Bogoyavlensky Tserkov ) of 1789 and the St. Nicholas Church ( Николаевская церковь / Nikolayev Tserkov ) in 1802 obtained next to the building of the former clergy educational institution and the Young Gymnasium.

The city has a museum of local history.

Economy and infrastructure

In Starodub as the center of an agricultural area outweigh companies in the food industry ( fruit and vegetables, dairy giant, etc.). There are also smaller companies of light and electro-technical industry.

The city is located is the end of a 30 -kilometer-long railway line which branches off the track in Schetscha Unecha - Woroschba (Ukraine ) (only freight).
