Starý Smokovec

Stary Smokovec ( Old Smokovec German, Hungarian Ótátrafüred ) is a district of the High Tatras and is located in 1010 m nm on the southern slope of the Slavkovský štit ( Slavkovský peak) in the High Tatras. Since 1999, Stary Smokovec is the administrative headquarters of the City High Tatras.

History

The town was founded in 1793. Stary Smokovec developed at the source of the well-known since ancient times " Altschmeckser sour water ". From the first half of the 19th century larger hotels. Because of the source, there were spa facilities.

In 1904 was built the Grand Hotel from Budapest architect Guido Hoepfner. Originally consisting of a block of hotel has been extended three times.

Since 1908 combines the Tatra Electric Railway Stary Smokovec with Poprad and Štrbské Pleso. 1912 was still a branch line to Tatranská Lomnica. Thereupon Stary Smokovec developed into the most important tourist resort in the south of the High Tatras. Stary Smokovec was at the time in competition with the other newly established settlements in the High Tatras.

Tourism

Stary Smokovec is the oldest tourist recreation center of the High Tatras. Many marked hiking trails and mountain paths have their beginning in Stary Smokovec. A modern funicular leading to the 1,280 m high Hrebienok ( ridged ).
