Starý Tekov

Stary Tekov ( German [ Alt ] Bersenberg or Altbarsch, Hungarian Óbars ) is a municipality in western Slovakia, with 1434 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Levice, a circle of the parent district Nitriansky kraj.

Geography

The municipality is located in Danube hilly country, a part of the Slovak Danube lowlands on the left bank of the river Hron, between the main river and its arm Perec. Stary Tekov is nine kilometers away from Levice.

There is a ferry between Stary Tekov and on the right bank of the river Hron lying neighboring Nový Tekov.

History

The place is an old settlement site, with finds from the Stone Age, Hallstatt period, further finds of Maďarovce culture and a Slavic fortified settlement from the 9th century. The actual place with the castle perch was first mentioned in 1075 as Bors in writing. The lowland fortress, originally belonged to the royal estate, was the first seat of the county of the same name, until it was moved in the 14th century after the expiration of the castle in the castle Levice. The town itself received city rights in 1240, after German colonists settled in the place; However Altbarsch could develop into a town never, although it has been referred to as such well into the 18th century. In 1241 it was the devastating Mongol invasion largely destroyed. At the beginning of the 14th century the place then belonged to the archbishopric of Gran, since 1388 estate of Levice. The place was predominantly agricultural and it was represented in part weaving.

Until 1919 the town belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and was then Czechoslovakia.

Culture

In odd-numbered years, the Folk Festival Tekovské folklórne slávnosti will be held in the community. Since 2006, local battle events of the Second World War under the name Boje na Hrone are presented annually in 1945 in a re-enactment event.
