State Space Agency of Ukraine

The State Space Agency of Ukraine ( SSAU ) (Ukrainian Державне космічне агентство України, Derzhavne kosmichne ahentstvo Ukrayiny, o ДКАУ, DKAU ) was founded as the Ukrainian Space Agency after the collapse of the USSR on 2 March 1992. The background was that a significant part of the Soviet space industry, including the design office " Yushnoe " NPO ( translated as " southern " ) of the designer Mikhail Kuzmich Yangel now were on Ukrainian territory. This affected both the production of military (SS -18 Satan ) and civilian rocketry ( Zenit, Cyclone, Dnepr ) and the appropriate spacecraft. To maintain existing skills and simultaneous conversion national five-year programs were adopted.

The first of 1993-1997 served to maintain the industrial and research capacity spaceflight -related potentials in the interest of building a national economy and at the same time penetrating the international market of space flight services. During this time, some farms were converted on typical conversion products such as tractors and consumer goods.

The second 1998-2002 was directed more on the needs of the international market. There products and services from one source (including starting complexes, missiles, provision of data and system components ) were offered. Great efforts have been made to integrate Ukraine into the international space community. Underlying this is the acquisition of external funding sources by joint ventures such as " Sea Launch " and concluding treaties with 20 countries or agencies.

The current program 2003-2007 is even more focused on the specific ( paying ) users. Here are both the economic / legal conditions ( eg external funding sources ) as well as the technological base to be improved. High goals are sought in international cooperation. This one relies on close relationships with American companies, but also looks with power connection to Europe. It therefore includes targeted programs to:

  • Scientific Space Research
  • Remote Sensing of the Earth
  • Satellite communications
  • Development of Erdkomponenten for navigation and special information systems
  • Space flight activities in the interest of national security and defense
  • Space Complex (next to Sea Launch and land or aircraft - based systems )
  • Development of basic elements and advanced space flight technologies
  • Expansion of research, testing and production base of the spacecraft sector

Currently, the Cyclone -4 is on the development work, a light launcher Majak is designed, the zenith is developed to Zenit- M and the Dnepr to Dnepr -M. After the success of the satellite " self- 1M " to find more (MC -1 TK "micro Sputnik ", MC- 2-8 S "I -2") in the works.

To NSAU includes the train tracking and measuring complex in Evpatoria in Crimea. The industrial core of the space industry of Ukraine is in Dnepropetrovsk, Kiev and Kharkov.
