Stateira I

Stateira ( † about 331 BC) was a sister wife of Darius III. a Persian queen (since 336 BC) of the dynasty of the Achaemenids.

Life

Origin

Stateira was probably the daughter of the Persian nobles Arsames ( Arsanes ). Whether they also have a daughter of Sisygambis and thus a full sister of Darius III. was, is not safe. She was considered the most beautiful woman in all of Asia. She is the only wife of Darius III testified.

Captivity

For expedition of Darius III. against Alexander the Great, she accompanied her husband, according to tradition, together with her daughters Stateira and Drypetis, her young son Ochus and other Persian women make. After Alexander's victory at the Battle of Issus (333 BC) they came with the entire family of the Persian king in Macedonian captivity. But Alexander treated Stateira as well as the royal family with the utmost respect total.

Death

Stateira was very worried about her husband. After Alexander's visit to Egypt she died of a miscarriage and was given command of the grieving much it to Macedon king a magnificent funeral in Old Persian tradition.

When Darius III. the death of his wife and their respectful treatment and reasonable funeral by Alexander learned he speculated at first that this treatment generously unusual it appears can be explained by a love affair of the Macedonian conqueror to his beautiful wife, who had therefore have tainted their reputation by adultery.
