States of Jersey

The States of Jersey ( French: États de Jersey) are the Parliament and the Government of the Channel Island of Jersey.

The "States of Jersey", which existed in the 16th century, were a national assembly, consisting of the Chief Justice ( Bailiff ), the 12 Jurats, the 12 parish priests, the 12 mayors ( Constable ) and 14 elected by the taxpayers representatives. The latter were for life, the elected constables to 3 years. After the constitutional changes of 1948 made ​​by the States of Jersey from 53 selected, independent members, including 12 senators and 12 constables - one each from each Parish - and 29 deputies.

The Parliament's official languages ​​are English and French, in practice the working language is now English.
