Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 14-17 millimeters. The head is bright yellow. The antennae are gray dorsally, the first third is yellowish white. The antennae of the males are strongly ciliated. The thorax is yellow, the first third and the abdomen area are gray-brown. The scales on the wing joint are surrounded by yellow and gray brown. The forewings are yellowish ocher to golden yellow and tinged with pale brown scales, which have a dark brown base. Often a leaden gloss is observed. On the fore wings are on the first and second trimester incomplete dark brown transverse fascia. The hind wings are brilliantly colored gray-brown. The eye-catching Hintertibien are yellow and blackish- drawn and tufted bristles near the spurs and at the distal ends of the basal Tarsenglieder. In the typical resting position the Hintertibien be stretched almost at right angles from the body. The Spurs are at right angles to the body and are directed slightly upwards.

Dissemination

Stathmopoda pedella is widely used in Europe with the exception of the far north and the south, the species occurs locally but only rarely. In the south it is found in mountainous regions. Furthermore, they are found in the Caucasus and the Far East regions of Russia. In North America, the species was introduced.

Way of life

The larvae of Stathmopoda pedella live in the unripe fruits of black alder ( Alnus glutinosa) and gray alder ( Alnus incana ), where they mainly eat the seeds. The fruits affected have brownish stains, feces are expelled from the fruit. The larvae pupate in October in a silky cocoon in leaf litter and hibernate.

Flight times and caterpillars

Stathmopoda pedella forms one generation per year, which flies from late June to July. The moths are nocturnal and are attracted by the light. The caterpillars can be found from August to end of September.
