Statistical Lab

The computer program Statistical Lab (Statistical Lab ) is an exploratory and interactive toolbox for statistical analysis and data visualization. It supported by a very descriptive approach and through a series of functions in particular, training in statistics in the economic and social sciences. The program is developed by the Center for Digital Systems, Freie Universität Berlin. Since 27 September 2006, version 3.5, the statistics lab is available as free software in source code under GPL. Previous versions were freeware for non-commercial applications.

Simple or complex statistical problems can be simulated using the statistics laboratory, processed and solved individually. The program can be extended with external libraries. An adaptation to individual and local requirements, such as individual statistics courses for specific user groups is also possible over these libraries. The various graphical display modes allow intuitive visualizations of the underlying data.

The Statistical Lab is the successor of statistics interactive! In contrast to the commercial SPSS Statistical Lab is didactically motivated. It is aimed primarily at statistical layman. In order to keep the barriers to entry for students as low as possible in the statistics, which combines statistics laboratory records, frequency tables, random numbers, matrices etc. in a user-friendly virtual worksheet that allows users to exploratory and playful, perform calculations analyzes, simulations, and data manipulation.

For the mathematical calculations, the Statistical Lab used the R programming language, a free implementation of the developed by Bell Laboratories language S for processing of statistical data. The R Project is constantly being further developed by the R community, a global community of volunteer developers.
