Statistics Belgium

The Directorate-General Statistics and Economic Information (abbreviated GDSWI, former State Bureau of Statistics, SLA) is part of the Belgian Federal Public Service Economy, SMEs, Self -employed and Energy and has its headquarters in the WTC III building, Boulevard Simon Bolivar 30, at Brussels.

The GDSWI organized surveys of Belgian households and businesses, evaluates existing official databases (eg the National Register ) or from processes them, and transmits data to Belgian and international agencies and settings. Third parties can also take the statistical expertise of GDSWI to complete. She is also Belgium's official contact point for international settings such as Eurostat and the OECD.

Tasks and assignments

The basic task of the GDSWI could be summarized in three words: collect, process and disseminate relevant, reliable and knowledgeable gedeuteter figures for Belgian society.

Under ' collection ' means the gathering of data for the various actors in the social and economic sphere. This is achieved through direct or indirect surveys. Surveys of the population under investigation is questioned directly by interviewers, while indirect surveys official register ( file of social security, tax registers, central register of companies ... ) are used. The latter operation is increasingly being used as it reduces the amount of work and the cost to businesses or individuals.

' Processing ' of statistical data included in the first place a critical review of the information provided. This is followed by the verifying and validating the responses in that they are checked for soundness and probability. Then the GDSWI takes on the basic data in summary tables.   • The economy, in the form of indices (eg consumer price indices ) and economic indicators for industrial production, investment, exports, employment, retail and service sectors ...

Surveys

From the GDSWI conducted surveys among others the labor force survey, on income and living conditions on the structure and distribution of wages, on the structure of the company, as the Agricultural Census, the 2011 Census ( the former " census ") and the Household Budget Survey.

In addition, the Directorate-General takes part in several major surveys of other settings. Examples of these are the Health Survey of the Scientific Institute Public Health and the time use survey of the research group TOR of the Free University of Brussels (VUB ). Also, other government settings can draw on the methodological expertise of the GDSWI.
