History

In the 12th century, the first permanent settlements whose inhabitants until very late, went over in the 13th century to Christianity emerged. The " Stede Broek " ( Grootebroek ) received in 1364 the city and market privileges. As the population was always unhappy in the party elections in the dispute " Hoeken and Kabeljauwen " says Broek never developed the right city: the city was right example several times temporarily recovered; Broek had a shooting club, but was never walled. The residents were farmers or fishermen.

In the 15th, 16th and 17th century the place was relatively prosperous. In 1671 even a brick road was completed by Broek. It was a land connection between the then major trading cities Hoorn and Enkhuizen. Thus, the heyday Grootebroeks was over. Fires, crop failures, floods and epidemics investigated the home place.

Only in the 20th century, the situation has improved, as the horticultural arose. In February 1999, broke out among visitors to the horticulture and consumer fair "West Friesian Flora" in Bovenkarspel an epidemic of legionellosis or Legionnaires' disease from. One of the exhibitors had a hot tub on display, which was (as it later turned out) with the bacterium Legionella pneumophila infected. Tiny Wassertröpfe from the device infested visitors to the fair. 28 Of the 230 diagnosed with Legionellosis visitors died of it. This disaster was the occasion to adopt strict security measures for hygiene of water pipes for the Dutch Ministry of Health.
