Album

The album was released on 28 September 1989 at CBS Records. It was recorded (both July 1989 ) in AIR Studios in Montserrat (June 1989), Olympic Studios in London and the Hit Factory in New York City. The production took over The Glimmer Twins (a pseudonym of Jagger / Richards ) and Chris Kimsey. It was the first album the Stones, which was digitally recorded and mixed. The cover design is by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith.

Steel Wheels is one of the best selling albums of the Rolling Stones. It marked the reunion of the band after the quarrels in the 1980s. The highest rankings in the charts were # 3 in the U.S. and number 2 in the UK.

The album begins with one of the typical Stones rocker ( " Sad Sad Sad " ) and ends with the singing of Keith Richards ballad " Slipping Away ". The next " Terrifying " ( groovy bass lines, muted trumpet, Jaggers cravings ) most interesting song is the embossed piece of African sounds " Continental Drift". Here are listening to The Master Musicians of Jajouka from Morocco, with whom Brian Jones in 1969 worked together. Other guest musicians on the album were Chuck Leavell (piano, organ ), Luis Jardin ( perc ), Matt Clifford ( keyb ), Phil Beer ( violin, mandolin ), The Kick Horns, Bernard Fowler, Sara Dash, Lisa Fischer and the group Farafina from Burkina Faso.

The single " Mixed Emotions ", which made it to number 5 on the U.S. Billboard charts, gave the Stones the first veritable hit in the U.S. since the 1981 published "Start Me Up".

Since 17 July 2009, the album is also available as a digital remastering.

Tour

After the release of the Stones Steel Wheels went for the first time since 1982 on tour again. The Steel Wheels tour led from August to December in 1989 by the United States and Canada ( the opening act played, among others, Guns N ' Roses). For the first time in its history, the band has also performed in Japan. All 10 concerts ( 14 to 27 January 1990) found in Karakuen Stadium ( Tokyo Dome) held in Tokyo.

The tour was continued from May 1990 on the Urban Jungle tour through Europe. Since the Steel Wheels stage was too big for the European stadiums, a completely new stage was constructed and the concert program was slightly modified and shortened. Within three months, the Stones played eg in Rotterdam (kick ), Munich, Barcelona, Paris, London, Prague and for the first time in East Berlin ( at discounted prices).

The world tour was the most successful up to this point and the highest turnover had ever attended a rock band. Both in North America and in Japan and Europe, many of the concerts were sold out within hours.
