Stefan Lorant

Stefan Lorant ( born February 22, 1901 in Budapest, Austria - Hungary, † November 14, 1997 in Rochester, Minnesota, United States) was a Hungarian- American photographer, journalist and editor. He is often referred to as the pioneer of modern photojournalism and "inventor" of photojournalism, although reports that tell a story in sequence, before the First World War in illustrated magazines such as " The Week", "Berlin Illustrirte newspaper " or " Illustrirte newspaper" had appeared. This view is based on self- representation as well as the tradition of the photographer Tim Gidal.

Life

Stefan Lorant was born into a Jewish family. At the age of 18 he had to leave his home due to terrorist actions in time Horthy. He went to Austria and worked in the 1920s as a cinematographer, screenwriter and director in Vienna and Berlin.

About his screenplay work, he came up with the journalism in touch and wrote first for the " Ufa -Magazin " and the " images - Courier". In 1928, he became chief editor of the "Munich Illustrated Press " and moved to Munich. On March 13, 1933 he was arrested by the Nazis and was to 25 September of the same year in the police prison in the Ettstraße in so-called "protective custody". A short time he was detained in prison Munich - Stadel home, but not in a concentration camp. His 1935 published diary I Was Hitler 's Prisoner ("I was Hitler's Prisoner " ) describes his sentence and made him internationally known.

After his release he emigrated to Hungary and Paris to London, where he founded two magazines: 1934, " Weekly Illustrated " and 1937, the satirical magazine " Liliput ". Although " Liliput " has sold well, the ad business was bad and ran into the red. So Lorant was forced to sell the magazine in 1938 to Edward Hulton. This turned Lorant along with Tom Hopkinson to, " Picture Post " to publish a new journal. The magazine was a great success: after only a few months a weekly circulation of 1,350,000 was reached.

1940 Lorant moved to the United States. Here he devoted himself to documentary photography and published a series of photo books on historical topics, including the 1951 band released Lincoln: His Life in Photographs ( " Lincoln: His Life in Photographs ").

1948 Lorant was a U.S. citizen.

Lorant died on 14 November 1997 at the Mayo Clinic of Rochester.
