Stefano Rodotà

Stefano Rodotà (* May 30, 1933 in Cosenza ) is an Italian jurist, professor and politician.

Rodotà graduated in law at the University La Sapienza in Rome, from which he graduated at the legal philosopher Emilio Betti 1955. At the same university Rodotà later became professor of civil law. As a visiting professor, he has taught at many universities at home and abroad, including at All Souls College, Oxford, Stanford School of Law, and the Law Faculty of the University of Paris I Panthéon- Sorbonne. From 1979 to 1994 he was a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, first as an independent candidate for the Communist Party of Italy, since 1983 for the list of Sinistra Indipendente and then for the PDS. He was installed as Minister of Justice in the Shadow Cabinet by Achille Occhetto 1989. In the same year he was elected to the European Parliament. From 30 April to 4 June 1992, he served as Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies. From 1997 to 2005 he served as the first chairman of the newly formed independent authority for data protection ( garante dei dati personali per la protezione ).

In April 2013, the populist Movimento 5 Stelle argued and later the ecological Left Party SEL ( Sinistra Ecologia Libertà ) for ( successor to the supposedly distinctive Giorgio Napolitano ) to vote in the upcoming election of a new President of Italy for Rodotà.
