Stefano Tilli

Stefano Tilli ( born August 22, 1962 in Orvieto ) is a retired Italian athlete who can look back on a period of nearly two decades of exceptionally long international career as a sprinter. Between 1984 and 2000 he participated four times in the Olympic Games.

Career

Internationally, he first appeared with the title win in the 60 -meter run at the Indoor Athletics Championships 1983 in Budapest in appearance. The most significant success of his career, he celebrated more than six months later in Helsinki at the first World Championships in Athletics. The Italian team won the 4 x 100 - meter relay in the lineup Stefano Tilli, Carlo Simionato, Pavoni Pierfrancesco and Pietro Mennea with national record time of 38.73 s the silver medal behind the U.S. relay ( 37.86 s, former world record).

After a few years with injury problems Tilli started in 1996 at the Olympic Games in Atlanta again in the 100 -meter run, but failed in the preliminary round. At the World Athletics Championships in Athens in 1997 he reached the quarter-final round over the same distance. A moderate success he recorded at the European Athletics Championships 1998 in Budapest with fourth place in the 200 -meter run. The same ranking he reached surprisingly well at the Indoor Athletics 2000 European Championships in Ghent on 60 meters when he and 6.59 s achieved a personal best at the age of 37 years. After the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, where he retired more than 100 m in the quarterfinal round, he ended his active career.

Others

Stefano Tilli launched among others for CUS Roma, Snam gas Metano and Fabrizio Lepore. After the end of his athletic career, he worked as a television commentator, and as a manager of some top athletes, including his former girlfriend Merlene Ottey. He also leads a physiotherapy practice. Tilli is married and has a son.
