Steffan Danielsen

Johan Steffan Danielsen ( born September 3, 1922 in Nólsoy, Faroe Islands, † May 28, 1976 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands ) was a Faroese painter.

The self-taught Steffan Danielsen found most subjects for his idiosyncratic images in his village Nólsoy and around the island of the same name. In his art Steffan Danielsen is a self- perceived impression of the landscape again, original and unpretentious. He is regarded as particularly original.

Bárður Jákupsson compares Danielsen in his book Færøernes billedkunst (Faroese visual art ) with the classic Sámal Mikines who lived on a similarly small, but much more remote and inaccessible island in the Faroe Islands: Mykines. Both islands have the most important bird colonies and both islands have only one place. In contrast to the " man of the world " Mikines Danielsen was only once, 1951-1956, out of the country in Denmark and spent his 24 productive years on Nólsoy otherwise. To Ólavsøka 1952 he had his first, exciting in the Faroese art scene sensation exhibition.

Steffan Danielsen has its home island described by his paintings in detail - has portrayed her motifs from all perspectives, from a boat on the sea, from an inaccessible rocky outcrop or from his kitchen window. In any light, the sun and the rain, snow and fog. Everything gives the impression of deeply felt perception and truthfulness. His landscapes are usually held in shades of gray, but he plays very sensitive to the Faroese shades.
