Steffen Menze

Steffen Menze ( born January 28, 1969 in Plauen ) is a former German footballer, who continued his athletic career as a coach and most recently served as sports director at Dynamo Dresden.

Playing career

Menze first played in the junior sections of the ESR steel ironworks city and the FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (FCV ). In the season 1987/1988 he belonged to the squad of the second team of the FCV, who played in the second-rate DDR -Liga. Of the 34 point games Menze played as a midfielder 21 games in which he scored five goals. By the descent of the first team from the DDR Oberliga after the 1987/88 season of FCV II was downgraded in the district league. In the following seasons Menze was still in the squad of the second team, with whom he was now playing in the third division. Only in the 1989/90 season he played with the first team nine point games in the DDR -Liga.

In the summer of 1990 he returned to ironworks town where his former Sports Association (SPA) had recently restructured in the football club steel and the second league season tackled. However, it took until March 16, 1991, until he could make his first league game. In the encounter steel FC - FC Sachsen Leipzig ( 3-0) it was used as a midfielder. In this position he played in the 1990/91 season ten times in the league, scoring three goals. In addition, he stood with his team as a left midfielder in the last cup final of the GDR, which was lost 0-1 against champions Hansa Rostock.

Then he followed the call of Eduard Geyer and moved to Hungary to Siófoki Bányász SE. Due to financial difficulties the club he remained there only half a season and moved into the winter break 1991/1992 to the 2nd Bundesliga for FC St. Pauli. In the second half but was only used three times for hamburgers. Then he went to Pforzheim, where he played one after the other for the Oberliga side 1 FC and the VfR. In 1994, he was transferred as a defender for Hannover 96. In the 2nd Bundesliga, he played for the Lower 40 games ( 3 goals ) and after relegation in 1996 he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt. After being there for another ten second league games (one goal ) completed, brought him Gerd Harmful in the following winter to FSV Zwickau. In the West Saxons, he was also reinstated as a midfielder. He remained until relegation in 1997/98 and then moved to the Regionalliga 1 FC Union Berlin.

In the Wuhlheide Menze became the leading player, team captain, top scorer ( 30 goals in 90 games Regional ) and crowd favorite. But he was also the tragic figure of the ascent Relegation in the 1999/2000 season, when he missed his penalty kick in the penalty shootout against VfL Osnabrück. Then the winged word evolved in the Union fans, " Menze is to blame " if something went wrong. In the following year Union succeeded with Menze promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and the advent of the DFB Cup final against Schalke 04, the end of his playing career, he went in 2003 for a year to Kickers Offenbach.

Steffen Menze was during his time at Union nicknamed " John" because of the name similarity to Achim Mentzel entertainer, who had also sung a fan song about the club.

Coaching career

After the retirement he moved to the coaching staff of the Offenbach on and supervised the crew of the OFC II until 2006. After the dismissal of Hans -Jürgen Boysen, he served for two days as interim coach of the second division team before Wolfgang Frank was committed. From the 2006/07 season he coached the traditional club SV Waldhof Mannheim in the Oberliga Baden -Württemberg, but was released in September 2007 because of persistent failure. In the 2008 /09 season Menze was back at Kickers Offenbach under contract as coach of the first team and II from January 2009 as an assistant coach of the first team. Following the resignation of coach Boysen in October 2009 Menze took over the team as a responsible instructor. Due to a lack of sporting success, the cooperation February 8, 2010 has been terminated.

On 9 March 2011 Menze was introduced as the new sporting director at Dynamo Dresden. In May 2011 he went with his new team after the relegation matches against VfL Osnabrück in the 2nd Bundesliga. After a leave of absence from Ralf Loose in December 2012 and after the leave of Peter Pacult in August 2013 Menze took over as coach on an interim basis in each case at Dynamo Dresden. In January 2014, the club announced that Menze would not renew its 30 June 2014 expiring contract and instead would seek a new challenge. He was then a week later Dynamo Dresden exempted until his contract expires.

Private

Menze graduated alongside his playing career a commercial training and continuous training for specialist sports host. He is married and has a son.
