Stein Castle (Bavaria)

Castle stone in stone adTraun is the most famous cave castle in Germany.

The castle consists of three parts:

  • The high castle on the almost 50 meter steep Nagelfluhwand;
  • The cave castle below, hidden in the rock creates a connection to the Trauntal;
  • Under the castle in stone itself

History

The origins of the high castle are not fully understood, maybe it already dates back to Roman or Celtic times. Stone was first documented in 1135. Connected to the castle is the shape of the legendary robber baron Hainz of the Wild Stone, said to have lived in the castle early 13th century and was first described by Lorenz Huebner 1783 in a " patriotic tragedy".

The castle itself was from the 13th century to 1633 in the possession of Toerring family. Albert of Toerring stone was from 1613 to 1649 Bishop of Regensburg, Adam Lorenz of Toerring Stone held the same office from 1663 to 1666.

Carl Graf Fugger of Kirchberg acquired in 1633 the ownership of the Toerrings, and later by marrying the Barons of fighting in the possession of the castle.

Created in 1818 from the former Hofmark in the course of reform in Bavaria, a patrimonial II class. 1845 bought Amélie of Leuchtenberg, widow of the Emperor of Brazil, castle stone for herself and her daughter. 1848 she joined the court stone against a compensation to the state.

1890, the flintlock to Count Joseph Arco - Zinneberg. 1928 had hit the big St. Georgi - forestry in order to repay debts through the sale of timber, the Arco- Zinneberg. They had to sell anyway, the forest went over to the State and has been reforested immediately.

High Castle, rock castle and lower palace are still owned by the 1907 newly built stone castle brewery, located since 1934 in the possession of the Wiskott family. The lower castle in stone houses since 1948, a boarding school, the "School Castle rock ".
