Steinberg, Kloster Eberbach

The Steinberg is a German single vineyard in the Rheingau wine region in Hesse. It is located in the district Hattenheim the community Eltville and is 37.2 hectares, the largest location in the Rheingau. The vineyard is planted exclusively with Riesling vines from which wines are produced, such as the legendary Steinberger Riesling Trocken Beerenauslese 1921. The domain Steinberg, which belongs to the Hessian State wineries Kloster Eberbach, is 34 ha in size. This is completely bordered by a stone wall.

Location and Geology

The Steinberg is located on the edge of the forest on a steep southwestern slope. The soil is interspersed with sand, gravel, clay loam and slate. History

Steinberg was created by the Cistercian monks of the nearby monastery Eberbach, which began in 1170 to connect with great energy individual parcels by purchase and exchange to a large vineyard. Steinberg basement

Since the construction of the Steinberg cellar, central cellars of the State wineries, was put in operation here in 2008, Steinberg has become the operational headquarters of Hesse's biggest winery.

The Steinberg cellar was built in 2006-2008 according to the plans of the architect Reinhard Moster of Neustadt on the Wine Road at a cost of 15.8 million euros. It occupies an area of ​​64 meters by 83 meters and goes from the level of the courtyard from three floors up to 14 feet in depth. The cellar was covered with a two -meter thick layer of soil.
