Geography

The small spa resort Steinheid on the crest of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, directly on the Rennsteig. The place is a half-moon over the Valley of Grümpen. With 820 meters Steinheid is next to Neuhaus am Rennweg ( 835 m) one of the highest places in Thuringia. The highest mountain in the area as well as the second highest of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, the 868 -meter high Kieferle, about 500 meters east of the village.

History

1362, the village was first mentioned as the steynerne Heyde documented in a Lehnsbrief the Margrave of Meissen.
