The Greek feature film Stella ( original title Στέλλα ) is the second directorial effort of Michalis Kakogiannis. In the title role, Melina Mercouri made ​​her film debut, the lead male role was played by Giorgos Foundas. The screenplay of the black and white film is based on the unperformed stage play Stella with red gloves of Iakovos Kambanellis. The music Manos Hadjidakis wrote, the scene was set by Giannis Tsarouchis.

The film was premiered on April 4, 1955, and was in the same year Greek competition entry at the film festival in Cannes. In 1956, Stella received a Golden Globe in the category Best Foreign Language Film. Submission

The early stage play Stella with red gloves (I Stella me ta kokkina gandia Η Στέλλα με τα κόκκινα γάντια ) by Iakovos Kambanellis served as the film original. In the period 1951-1954 Kambanellis worked plays at for the radio. Thus he came into contact with actors, among them Melina Mercouri. At her suggestion, the piece never mentioned Stella with red gloves arose. Kambanellis wrote the play itself to the script.

Awards

At the International Film Festival of Cannes 1955, the film was listed as a Greek competition entry for the Golden Palm. The following year, Stella received a Golden Globe in the category Best Foreign Language Film.
