Stellarium (computer program)

Stellarium is a free astronomy program under GNU General Public License for the simulation of a planetarium. The software runs under Microsoft Windows (9x, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 ), Mac OS X and GNU / Linux.

Using OpenGL is a photo-realistic sky tent with over 600,000 stars shown in real time, place and time as well as the solid angle can be chosen freely. Shown are stars and other astronomical objects that would be visible to the naked eye, binoculars or a small telescope optical light. The star catalog can be up to 18 size class, complementing more than 210 million stars, which Stellarium is also useful for greater light optics.

Some outstanding features include an almost photo-realistic sunrise and sunset, meteors and graphics of planets, nebulae, and galaxies. Also Stellarium shows the change in shape of the constellations over millennia of time. It can also create animations. One must be able to define scripts ( sample scripts are included).

It was programmed by Frenchman Fabien Chéreau Stellarium. Many graphics and images in the program come from other authors.
