Stelvio National Park

The Stelvio National Park (Italian: Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio) is a national park in South Tyrol, Trentino and Lombardy ( Italy).

Geographical location

The Stelvio National Park is 134,620 hectares, making it one of the largest nature reserves in Europe and extends over four Italian provinces:

  • The Province of Sondrio in the Lombardy region (municipalities Bormio, Livigno, Sondalo, Valdidentro Valdisotto and Valfurva )
  • The Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol in the Trentino -Alto Adige (municipalities Glurns, Laas, Laces, Mals, Martell, Prad, Schlanders, Stelvio, Tures and Ultimo )
  • The Autonomous Province of Trento, in the Trentino -Alto Adige (municipalities Pejo, Pellizzano and Rabbi )
  • The province of Brescia, in Lombardy region (municipalities Ponte di Legno, Temù, Vezza d' Oglio and Vione ).

The national park is bounded on the north by the Val Müstair and the Vinschgau, to the east by the Val d'Ultimo, in the south of Val di Sole and the Valcamonica and to the west by the Valtellina and Val di Livigno.

He also bordered to the north by the Swiss National Park Engadin in Graubünden and in the south by the Adamello Regional Park in Lombardy.

The entire Ortler Cevedale area is located within the National Park.

Climate and altitude

The Stelvio National Park has all alpine climates:

  • From valley floors in the lower Vinschgau Laces with about 650 m above sea level. NN
  • Over wooded mountain slopes from 700 to about 2100 m above sea level. NN
  • Located on grassy slopes and meadows of 2100 m above sea level. Sea level up to about 3000 m above sea level. NN
  • To high alpine glacier region near the Ortler (eg Monte Livrio - the second highest summer ski area in the Alps ) with up to 3905 m above sea level. NN.

It is characterized by a variety of alpine flora and fauna. The Stelvio National Park is one of the largest protected areas in the Alps.

For fishing in the National Park special permits are issued. Hunting is prohibited in itself, as the growing wildlife population but has done great damage to the trees and to the peasant holdings, the annual number of launches will be released for " removal specialists".

History

Since the beginning of the 20th century was already thinking about protection of the nature of the Ortler area. In 1935, finally, the whole area national park was. The regulation took place in 1951. In 1977 the park was extended. The symbol of the park is the Golden Eagle.

Infrastructure

Probably the most important link within the national park, which connects Bormio with Prad, so the Lombardy with South Tyrol, the Stelvio. This is with 2757 m the second highest pass in the Alps. In addition, the Swiss Carolingian ( 2502 m) connects the Stelvio Pass road with Santa Maria in Val Monastero. The Passo di Gavia connects the villages of Bormio and Ponte di Legno.

The headquarters of the National Park Service is located in Bormio, branch offices exist in Glorenza and Pejo.
