Stem cell factor ( also stem cell factor, SCF kit ligand or steel factor) is a protein belonging to the family of cytokines, which is of decisive importance for the survival, proliferation and differentiation of stem cells, particularly hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cells. The stem cell factor exists in two active forms, a cell membrane- bound and a free version. The free version is derived from the membrane-bound stem cell factor by metalloproteases. Its effects mediated stem cell factor by activation of the tyrosine kinase KIT.
