Stenocactus

Stenocactus multicostatus

Stenocactus is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name derives from the Greek adjective στενός ( Steno ) for tight or narrow and refers to the many narrow ribs. The type species of the genus is Stenocactus obvallatus.

Description

Stenocactus species have spherical to short cylindrical body with sharp and thin ribs, which are often curled. Young plants usually have warts and no ribs. The areoles are very far apart and carry ungehakte thorns, which can be clearly distinguished by strong central and weaker radial spines.

The hermaphrodite flowers are kurztrichterig and appear in the apex region. The bloom are white to purple in color. The fruits are bright green, spherical and slightly scaly. At maturity, they dry up and tear along to. The seed is glossy black - brown.

Systematics and distribution

The nomenclature of the genus has been confusing and controversial. The species of the genus have been performed for a long time under the generic name Echinofossulocactus. This genus described in 1841 George Lawrence. The genus included 26 species, but there was no type species indicated. Later it turned out that the 26 species belonging to five different genera. Karl Moritz Schumann introduced in 1898, and apparently unaware of the work of Lawrence to Echinocactus a subgenus Stenocactus on. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose took over in 1922 Echinofossulocactus and typified the genre with Echinofossulocactus coptonogonus. But you chose the kind only because it was first on the list of species of Lawrence. David Hunt, published in 1980 the results of taxonomic studies on the genus Echinocactus helophorus and hit a new lectotype for the genus Echinofossulocactus ago. This Echinofossulocactus became synonymous with Echinocactus. The International Organization for Sukkulentenforschung ( IOS) accepted as a consequence the genus Stenocactus and recognized them with their ten species.

Because of the flower and fruit characteristics is a close relationship of Stenocactus to suggest to Ferocactus.

Synonyms for the species are Brittonrosea Spegazz. and Efossus Orcutt, but not Echinofossulocactus Lawr ..

Currently, the genus consists of ten species listed below. They are all native to the Chihuahuan Desert in northern and central Mexico.
