Step by Step (New Kids on the Block song)

Step by Step is a song that was written in 1986 by Maurice Starr. The best-known version of which dates from the U.S. boy band New Kids on the Block from the year 1990. With over 6.5 million records sold the song is the world's most successful single of the group.

Formation

Starr produced 1986 album for The Superiors. The recording studio was booked, but Starr had not written a song. Ten minutes before the start of the recordings, he began to play the keyboard, and the melody sounded to him like steps. Thus he called the piece Step by Step (German: step by step). The song was released as a single by Motown, but did not reach the charts.

The version of the New Kids on the Block was released as the first single release from the album of the same in the U.S. on 10 May 1990 and went two weeks later at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. A month later, the song for three weeks was able to hold at # 1 and stayed a total of 15 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 and reached in October 1990 platinum status. Also in the Canadian charts, where the single was able to place for two weeks at number 1,, Step by Step, went platinum. In Europe, Step by Step, reached number two on the UK Top 40, placing itself among others in Germany, France and Norway in the top ten.
