Stephan Micus

Stephan Micus ( born January 19, 1953 in Stuttgart ) is a German musician, singer and composer, whose musical style is strongly influenced by his study of traditional instruments from different parts of the world, in particular the sitar, shakuhachi, steelpan, the 10 - and 14 -string guitar, Nay, kalimba, zither, or shō.

Life and work

Micus is self-taught as a composer. From extensive research trips, he brought an arsenal of instruments in which he can instruct mostly locally by local teachers. So he sat down for an extended stay India, the follow-up to his high school, with the sitar apart. After three years of intensive work created in 1976 created his piece As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams, which he was able to publish on the LP Implosion (1977 ) on JAPO Records and with the combined sound of the sitar guitar, and his singing.

From the beginning, Micus was not satisfied with it, to be instructed in the playing techniques of traditional instruments, but has almost always tried to develop their own musical approach on the instrument. By his own account he is doing it " all about the instruments to be released from their original context and create a whole new world of sound for them." Therefore He often plays the instruments with self-developed, unorthodox techniques or amends to reflect his musical ideas. In the same way he deals with the sounds of hewn stone blocks and modern instruments, such as the slope. Of particular interest is the unconventional combination of several instruments into larger groups, which he achieved as the sole musician with overdubbing techniques.

" From its very own language ', which has really grown universal and organic, the Jazz wrote podium at the meeting of Micus ' album Snow. Point is exactly on his 60th birthday on January 19, 2013 brought the multi-instrumentalist with a new album out Panagia. This, his twentieth solo album for ECM, set to music six Byzantine prayers with various stringed instruments. The name of Panagia is often used in the Greek Orthodox liturgy as the name of the Virgin Mary.
