Stéphane Franke

Stéphane Franke ( born February 12, 1964 in Versailles, France, † June 23, 2011 in Potsdam ) was a German track and field athlete and sports reporter in the 1990s as a long distance runner, particularly in the 10,000 - meter race, was successful. In European Athletics Championships, he won twice in a row, 1994 and 1998, the bronze medal. In addition, he had become in 1993, 1995 and 1996 German champion over 10,000 m. After the end of his athletic career, he worked among other things as a sports commentator and author.

Life

Stéphane Franke owned besides the German and French citizenship. At the age of five he was later moved with his parents first to Bergisch Gladbach to Filderstadt near Stuttgart.

Franke was active in sports since 1979 and as a teenager, a successful middle-distance runner (PB 800 m: 1:56,6 min; 1000 m: 2:35,0 min/1981; 1500 m: min/1982 3:58,46 ). In the early 1990s, he specialized in the longer distances.

Stéphane Franke started first for the sports club SV Salamander Kornwestheim, 1997 for the SC Charlottenburg. In his playing days he was 1.76 meters tall and 60 kg. Even today (2011) applies Franke European record over 25,000 m, the he set up on 30 March 1999 during a 30-kilometer run in Walnut (USA).

During his own sporting career Stéphane Franke worked as a trainer, including for Damian Kallabis, whom he led to the European title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 1998. Both came in 1998 under suspicion of doping, without them, the consumption of prohibited agents has been demonstrated. Franke also oversaw Jirka Arndt, who finished at the Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney over 5,000 m in eighth place.

In autumn 2000, Franke ended his sports career. After his playing days, he began to comment along with Dirk Thiele marathon events at Euro Sport. In addition, his subject area included all cross-country skiing competitions and various track and field events. 2001 Franke worked as director of the Berlin Athletics Sports Day ISTAF. Since 2004, he has published several books on the sport counselor running and walking.

On June 23, 2011 Stéphane Franke died at the age of 47 years at a clinic in Potsdam at the consequences of a tumor
