Life

Born and raised in San Francisco, Stephen White attended Santa Clara University and studied law at Charles Bruce Younger Sr. in Santa Cruz. He was admitted to the bar in 1874 and practiced in Los Angeles. From 1882 to 1884 worked as a prosecutor in Los Angeles County. Previously, White was a member of the first Los Angeles County Bar Association. From 1887 to 1891 he sat in the Senate of California, where he was chairman during the entire term of office. Also in 1887 he became vice governor of California, as Robert Waterman after the death of Washington Bartlett was governor. From 1893 to 1899 he represented then the state of California as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate.

He went on and won the so-called Free Harbor Fight to build a seven- year battle for a deep water port at San Predro, the forerunner of today's Port of Los Angeles. He was also known for his role as a defense lawyer. When he died in 1901, praised him both San Francisco and Los Angeles as the greatest genius and one of the most influential sons of California.
