Stephen Muchoki

Stephen (Steve ) Muchoki (born 23 December 1956) is a former Kenyan boxer. He was world champion in 1978 and silver medalist at the World Championships in 1974.

Career

Amateur

Muchoki won in 1974 in the light flyweight (-48 kg), the Commonwealth Games. In the same year he reached the finals of the World Championships in Havana. In this he faced the Cuban Jorge Hernández, whom he defeated 5-0 judges' votes. Also in 1974 Muchoki in Kampala Africa champion. 1976 Muchoki should start at the Olympic Games in Montreal. Due to the boycott of Kenya - in addition to 15 other African states - however, he was unable to attend.

At the World Championships in 1978 Muchoki by defeating among others about Sami Buzoli, Yugoslavia (5-0 ), and Jorge Hernández, Cuba (4:1), world champion. He was the first Kenyan, who was able to win this item. In the same year he won after a tight final defeat by Francis Musankabala, Zambia (3:2), the silver medal at the Pan-African Games, but gained revenge for the defeat in the final of the Commonwealth Games, which he won.

Professional

1979 Muchoki turned pro in Denmark. By his seventh victory in the seventh fight, he won the Commonwealth flyweight title. Four more victories later, he was in 1982 challenger to the WBA world champion Santos Laciar from Argentina. He lost the scheduled 15 rounds of the fight by TKO in Round 13. Shortly thereafter Muchoki lost to Keith Wallace and his Commonwealth title. Muchoki now returned to Kenya and gained the title of 'African Boxing Union '. He lost the title in 1986 Nana Konadu and after another defeat, he finished his career in 1988 after 14 victories in 19 fights.
