Stephen South

Reginald Stephen South ( born February 19, 1952 in Harrow) is a former British racing driver.

Life

In 1976, South first attracted attention by winning the British Formula 3 Championship. Having the Formula 2 European Championship 1979 on a March - BMW, the later the McLaren team boss Ron Dennis began his project4 team, as an overall 6th ended, South was considered one of the most promising talents in international motorsport.

Joined in 1980 McLaren Stephen South as a replacement for the injured Alain Prost at the U.S. Grand Prix West. However, the McLaren M29 was not competitive, and so it was not possible South to qualify. It should be his only Formula 1 appearance. For this formula one chance he had even given up a place in Formula 2 Toleman factory team as team-mate Brian Henton. The replacement driver at Toleman South, Derek Warwick, finished the 1980 season as runners- up behind Henton.

After Alain Prost was operational again, South denied the rest of the season with a Lola T530 - Chevrolet team of actor Paul Newman in the CanAm racing series. In the seventh race of the season in the Canadian Trois- Rivières accident South hard in training. In a frontal impact into a concrete wall in Turn 1, he broke both legs. Here, the left leg was so badly injured that the doctors had to amputate.
