Stephen Sulyk

Stephen M. Sulyk ( born October 2, 1924 in Balnycia ( Lemkovschina ), Ukraine) is an emeritus archbishop of the Uniate Greek Catholic Church with Rome Ukraine and Metropolitan of the archeparchy Philadelphia, USA.

Life

Stephen Sulyk was then Poland, born in the small village Balnycia, which was occupied from 1939 by the German Wehrmacht. 1939/1940 he was moved to an agricultural use to Germany, but returned after a holiday not return to his home village in 1940. He attended a German-speaking high school in 1944 and fled with his family from the Red Army to Germany and further into the Sudetenland. He survived as a translator for the Soviet army because of his language skills. With forged travel documents, he fled to the U.S. American-occupied zone in Germany. In a refugee camp, he finished his schooling and studied from 1946 at the seminary of the Greek Catholic Church in Hirschberg Castle at Beilngries. Through family ties to an uncle in Michigan, he received permission to emigrate to the USA in 1948. After a brief employment in a manufacturing facility for cars and a slaughterhouse in Dearborn, Michigan, he entered in 1949 in the St. Josaphat Seminary in Washington DC, USA, a. In 1952 he received his theological degree at the Catholic University of America ( CUA) in Washington DC

Sulyk received on 14 June 1952 by Archbishop Constantine Bohacewskyi the priesthood and was in the care of souls in Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas and New Jersey operates. In 1955 he became secretary of the Archbishop of archeparchy Philadelphia. In 1958 he was appointed papal chaplain ( Monsignor ). In 1961 he became pastor of St. Nicholas in Philadelphia.

Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1980 to the Archbishop and Metropolitan of the archeparchy Philadelphia. He received his episcopal consecration on March 1, 1981 Jossyf Slipyj Cardinal, Archbishop of Lviv and Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church; Were co-consecrators Basil Harry mustards, Bishop of the Eparchy of Stamford, and Neil Nicholas Savaryn OSBM, Bishop of the Eparchy of Edmonton.

Stephen Sulyk, a friend of the Jesuit missionary Walter Ciszek, engaged in a variety of ways. He was also a member of the U.S. bishops' conference, where he is responsible for the Commission for ceremonies.
