Stepnogor ( Kazakh Степногор; Russian Степногорск / Stepnogorsk ) is a city in Kazakhstan.

Geographical Location

The city is located about 130 kilometers (direct distance) north-northeast of the Kazakh capital Astana in the area Aqmola. Until the regional capital Kokshetau there are 239 km.

History

The town was founded in 1959 and 1964 raised to town. The town was in Soviet times as a closed city, the code name Zelinograd -25 (Russian Целиноград - 25) or Makinsk -2 ( Макинск -2 ) derived from the former name of the city of Astana, and the city Makinsk. Near the city of nuclear technology ( uranium enrichment) and biochemical facilities were built. In Soviet times, there were biological weapons, including anthrax spores, developed by the Soviet authorities, among others, Ken Alibek Biopreparat and manufactured.

Infrastructure
