( Often taken as stercobilin from English ) stercobilin is one of the breakdown products of hemoglobin. Stercobilin is responsible for having the brown -red color of the faeces and produced by derivatization of bilirubin. Due to its molecular structure it belongs to the linear tetrapyrroles ( bile pigments ).
Specific words stercobilin is excreted in the feces, whereas the processed degradation products of hemoglobin, which are excreted in the urine, urobilinogen and urobilin are called.
