Sterkstroom is a city in South Africa's Eastern Cape. It is located in the municipality in the district of Chris Hani Inkwanca.

Geography

The place has, together with the eastern township Masakhe, 7,165 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). The town lies at the southern foot of the mountain massif Storm at Hex River, approximately 55 kilometers north-west of Queenstown.

History

Sterkstroom was founded in 1875 on the occasion of the construction of a church. The name is Afrikaans and means " strong flow " according to the Hex River. In 1898 he received municipality status.

Sterkstroom lies at the intersection of the roads R344, the Tarkastad connects to the southwest with Dordrecht in the northeast, and the R397, which leads from Molteno in the north-west to Queenstown in the South East. East of the village runs the national road N6. The town lies on the railway line Johannesburg - East London and has a railway station, which is operated in freight traffic. A branch line runs from east to Sterkstroom Maclear. West of the town is an airfield.
