Sterling is a city ( with a status of "City" ) in Whiteside County in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, Sterling had 15,370 inhabitants.

Geography

Sterling is located at 41 ° 47'19 " north latitude and 89 ° 46'41 " west longitude and extending over 13 km ². The town is the center of Sterling Township.

Sterling is located on the Rock River opposite the neighboring town of Rock Falls. Other neighboring towns are Dixon ( 20.9 km ENE ), Tampico (22,3 km southwest), Round Grove ( 18.6 km to the west ) and Palmyra (14,2 km northeast).

The nearest large towns are Rockford ( 87.4 kilometers north-east ), Chicago (187 km east), Peoria (128 km south) and the Quad Cities ( 92.3 kilometers south-west ).

Traffic

Along the Rock River into west-east direction of the Illinois State Route 2 through the city. In the center of the llinois & State Route 40 crosses and crosses a bridge over the river then south to Rock Falls. All other roads are subordinate, partly unpaved driveways and local roads.

In sterling cross several railway lines of the Union Pacific Railroad and the BNSF Railway as well as a range of Amtrack from Chicago to the west.
