Sterndrive

The Z-Drive is by its design so-called gearbox with clutch for motor boats. This drive is mounted on the transom, and thus is outside of the boat.

At fast sports boats under 10 meters (33 feet) in length, this is a very common propulsion method, intended to combine the advantages of static with those of outboard motors. Compared to pure inboard engines and classical wave systems boats with sterndrives are much more maneuverable. Compared to outboard motor boats with inboard engine and sterndrive are generally much quieter. In addition, the range of fuel-efficient and powerful diesel engines is very small on outboards while, everything is possible in the inboard region including alternative drive concepts.

Biggest weak point of the Z- drive is its price. An outboard is much cheaper than an inboard with sterndrive. In addition, the hinge connection between the Z- drive and the hull, and their seals and moving parts are subject to high wear.
