Gel fuel or fuel gel consists of denatured alcohol (ethanol ), which becomes a gelatinous mass to viscous by the addition of calcium acetate.

The paste is used for operating stoves or for Emergency Cooker in outdoor and military markets and usually comes in the form of small doses ( 80 - 200 ml ) in the trade, from which they can be burned directly. In addition, the sale takes place in tubes or bottles. The advantage over the use of pure alcohol is that even if tipped over the burner, the paste does not run or evaporate. Because of the lower risk of fire it is therefore referred to as security paste. Burner for gel fuel contained in contrast to pure fuel burners no sponge, as this is not necessary due to the viscosity and would stick together. Therefore burners can not be filled with fuel paste and also the reverse does not work for alcohol.

Gel fuel has a lower flash point than ethanol, so a boiler does not have the operation with gel fuel in cold weather be preheated.
