Sternohyoid muscle

The Musculus sternohyoideus ( " sternum - hyoid muscle ") is a paired narrow striated muscle of the so-called " handle " ( manubrium ) of the sternum pulls the hyoid bone. It belongs to the infrahyoid muscles ( muscles infrahyale ), the hyoid bone moves downward and is thus involved in the act of swallowing. The innervation is via the ansa cervicalis profunda, a nerve loop of the neck braid.

The musculi sternohyoidei both sides bordering at the front center of the neck against each other and are interconnected by connective tissue. In veterinary medicine procedure is used for operations on the intervertebral discs of the cervical spine between this muscle pair.
