Sternum (arthropod anatomy)

The term sternum (plural sterna ) is from Ancient Greek στέρνον Sternon: derived breast.

Insects

The term refers to the sternum in insects the ventral ( belly side ) between the two pleurae lying part of a body segment. Prosternum, mesosternum and Metasternum are the three sterna of the thoracic portion. Each secondary demarcated from the sternum sclerotized ( hardened ) District ( sclerite ) is called sternite or belly plate. A sternite of the abdomen ( tummy) is Hinterleibssternit or Abdominalsternit, also called Urosternit. The last Abdominalsternit means Apikalsternit. A sternite of the chest section called Bauchsternit or ' Thoracalsternit.

The Akrosternit ( gr άκρον the top, the Supreme ) is a usually narrow strip on the front edge of the sternite, which morphologically belongs to the preceding sternite, and is separated from it by a secondary Intersegmentalmembran. Analog rear attached strip hot Poststernit. Akro - and Poststernite among the Intersterniten. These are original Intersegmentalhäute that strongly sclerotized form an additional sternite. Coxosternite called separated laterally -lying parts of the Abdominalsternite. As Laterosternit (also Pleutosternit or Sternopleurit ) is called the ventral side adjoining the primary sternum in front of the hip skeleton part. Coxo and Laterosternite be summarized as Pleuralsternite. As Endosterniten denotes the chitinous structures of a sternite, which are located on the inside of the body.

Arachnids

In arachnids the breastplate of the forebody sternum is called. The hardened undersides of the more or less fused abdominal segments of arachnids called sternites, tergites their tops. As Endosternit is called internal skeletal parts in the prosoma of spiders.

Crustaceans

Also in crustaceans of the ventral area of the exoskeleton between the extremities of each segment is called sternite. Whereas the sternum is the area formed by all sternites.
