Stetten (Haut-Rhin)

Stetten is a commune with 331 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the canton of Sierentz and community association Pays de Sierentz.

Geography

The community Stetten in Sundgau is approximately in the middle between the cities of Basel, Mulhouse and Altkirch.

Neighboring communities of Stetten are Uffheim in the north, chapels in the east and southeast, Helfrantzkirch the southwest, Magstatt -le-Haut in the west and Magstatt -le- Bas in the northwest.

History

Archaeological discoveries that are now in the Historical Museum in Mulhouse, evidence of a settlement on the Ruetchyberg. In 5300 dated before Christ, they are among the oldest examples of a rural culture in Central Europe.

Under the name Eistatis there in the year 736, a first known mention of this village. The Abbey Murbach, the monastery Einsiedeln and later the Basel administration had possessions in the spell of Stetten. Stetten was as the surrounding villages long in the suzerainty of Landser. After the reign of the Habsburg Stetten came after 1648 in the sphere of the French kings.

Key and sword are the insignia of Peter and Paul, the patron saints of the church Stettener. Red and gold are the colors of Habsburg. The two ravens on a golden background date back to the arms of the Abbey of Einsiedeln.

Attractions

Built in the medieval church of St. Peter and Paul consists of a covered boat which was rebuilt in 1700, and a chancel tower with a pitched roof. The town hall ( Mairie ), was formerly the school, was 1889.
